Tyto Online has been designed so that students can self-guide themselves to goals if they are playing on their own, but you can also assign specific content. And as a teacher, we definitely recommend you do this in order to meet your curriculum goals!
Log into your Teacher Learning Dashboard. And then go to the Explore & Plan section.
Here, you can look through the Modules of content available and see all of the content available within them.
There are two types of activities students can do: quests and the sandbox for each module. Let's dig into the Sandboxes in this article!
There is one Sandbox per Module that is a more in-depth and creative building-based experience.
For Ecology, this is building their own ecosystems. For Heredity, this is breeding dragon-like creatures that use genetic concepts.
You can use these as longer-term projects that students can develop as they learn more throughout the unit, and as a basis for often animated in-class discussions and activities.
For example, we love the create-your-own ecosystem Sandbox because students almost always mess up by either having an explosion of a small quick-breeding animals like deer mice, or too many predators that aren’t sustainable in their ecosystem.
This is a great chance to start talking about trophic levels with your students from a much more concrete perspective, as they need the information to fix problems in their ecosystems. They therefore all also have a knowledge base to participate in the discussion together.
The Sandboxes will automatically unlock once your students get to Level 3 in a Module. But on the website, you can also assign it to them to get it started whenever you want. This is available at the top of each Module description under Explore & Plan.
